A content management system often abbreviated as a CMS is a software that helps users create, modify and manage content on a website without the need for specialized technical knowledge.
Originally, in order to create a website, many lines of codes have to be written which will then be interpreted and provided in a useful human readable format by a server.
The same process occurs when a single modification has to be made. A website developer has to edit certain lines of codes in order to implement new changes to a website.
With a CMS, that’s a thing of the past. It has a user friendly interface where inputs are made, files are uploaded and buttons are clicked in order to create, modify and manage a website.
With a CMS, a developers knowledge of codes is still useful as a situation might occur when certain aspects of the website has to be customised to fit the needs of the user.
Examples of popular content management systems including WordPress, Wix, Shopify, Magento, Joomla, Squarespace, Webflow, BigCommerce etc.
In another post, I’ll show you three major types of content management systems under which the previous examples fall.
